What Brake Pads are
What They Do
What Types There are
There are four: organic, ceramic, metallic or semi-metallic, and carbon fiber.
Organic brake pads are ideal for everyday driving, on normal roads and in temperate weather. They're dependable, easy on rotors, and inexpensive. They don't produce much dust, either.
Ceramic brake pads are made for more diverse weather. They're quieter than other kinds, too. Plus, their dust isn't as sticky, making them a little easier on wheels.
Metallic/semi-metallic brake pads are more durable. They resist both heat and brake fade, for example. Moreover, they're firmer-feeling than other types.
Carbon-fiber brake pads are some of the best you can get. Not only are they highly resilient and superior performers at high temperatures. They also offer the best possible stopping power.
When Should You Change Them?
This depends on how you drive and where you drive most often. Otherwise, replace them every 40,000 to 50,000 miles or so. There are symptoms that'll tell you it's time.
What are the Signs They're Going Bad?
Damaged or worn-out pad surfaces, most obviously, along with whining brakes and grinding noises (indicating warped and/or damaged rotors). Others include:
- Warning lights on the dash
- Vibrating during braking
- Taking longer to slow down and come to a stop
See any, and you should run an inspection, swapping out any old pads for new ones, according to the results. Before ordering them, though, be sure you're getting genuine ones.
