Spark Plugs: What Do They Do?
They combust the oxygen and fuel inside a vehicle's engine, generating the power it runs on.
How They Work
As part of a process called spark ignition. It begins when the key turns in the ignition lock cylinder and the ignition switch trips. The car battery, a starter motor, a starter solenoid, and an ignition coil then start to generate electricity. They send it to the plugs' leads, combustion occurs, and the engine pistons, crankshaft, alternator, and more begin running.
What are the Symptoms of a Bad One?
- Corroded terminals
- Physical plug breakdown
- Excessively widened leads
- Reduced conductivity
- Hard starts
- Worsening gas mileage
- Engine misfires
- Rough idling
- Having trouble accelerating
When They Should be Changed
For one, if you see the signs mentioned above. Secondly, if you inspect the plugs and the inspection's results recommend replacing them. Third, before they exceed the mileage limits specified in your owner's manual.
Before you order new ones, though, be sure they're genuine.
